Life update:
Lila lives in Boston, and I spent my birthday there. It was excellent fun and I'm incredibly jealous that she is able to have the time and resources and skill and wit to move to Boston without anything really lined up. I hope she comes home soon, but Boston rules, so who knows. I'm immensely proud of her.
I have been neglecting the internet sans a few random things that I look at when I'm at work. I've been scrounging up records like it's going out of style which isn't something I should be doing financially, or for practical reasons (I'm out of space!).
3 bands this year that have horrible names but put out good records:
pains of being pure at heart
war on drugs
we were promised jetpacks

I'm going to see Kurt Vile in a few weeks, and Logic Problem will FINALLY be playing in Charlotte again, though honestly it seems like it's against their own will. I'm excited to see Nick again. Hawks will be in town this weekend as well, which means I get to see all of them.

School starts soon, and I've done almost no preparation. I'm not in good enough shape to ride to campus (lazy), so I either have to ride a lot for the next few weeks, or DRIVE, which isn't fucking happening.
I'll soon be graduating, but I feel like I have a billion years of school left with no real end in sight. It's frustrating and I'm at the point where I'm not sure I'm even going to school for the right reasons.

Lunchbox Records is still the best record store, Penguin still rules as take out, I'll still eat a sandwhich almost every day and I still drink more cheerwine than is meant to be ingested by any living being. I guess as far as those aspects of my life go, not much has changed.

I might buy a macbook. I need a laptop for school and teaching, and my computer works fine, which makes me feel unbelievably guilty for buying another, but that's neither here nor there.

If anyone reading this wants to talk or catch up or whatever, my email address is:
radavis1@uncc.edu

and my phone number is

Grids put out a 7"

and a tape (that is just bikini kill covers)

Lila lives with me now. we live at 8th and Pecan with Bobby and Nick; but Nicks on tour right now in Europe, so we live with Bobby and Lindsay, but she only lives here on weekends. Then Lila is leaving for Boston in July. Then I'll live here with Bobby, and Lindsay, and then Nick when he gets back. Also, Tobias the cat lives here.
It's swell diggs.
I ride my bike to work every day, and eat a sandwich at least 5 days a week. It's glorious.

I'm going to some other towns to play shows soon. That will be fun. I still work at the only record store.
I've gotten really into ping pong recently. I'm pretty much the shit.

I am working at Dilworth Elementary School next year. It's 5 miles from where I live. I was hoping for the school right around the corner, but I can deal with a 10 minute drive. I get paid nothing, but get to work with 5th graders, which is EXACTLY what I was looking for, so I am excited.

the grids went to atlanta last weekend and partied for too many days with my favorite band in the southeast, Hawks. they are better than any band you've been in, or will be in. seriously.

you ever feel like you're actually doing something with your life even though you've been doing the same thing for as long as you can remember? that happened today.
I update this blog about punk and hardcore and pictures and stuff, it's also kind of about our house, but not all the way:
Penalty Box Blog
I don't know if that means I'm ignoring you livejournal, but it definitely means I take a lot more half assed pictures, put them online, and pretend like I'm documenting something fun.
Grids knocked out recording 6 songs, four of which are going to be on another 7" coming out at the end of summer in ONE DAY. what the fuck did you do in one day? get work done? fuck off. No more cd's, seriouslyl. waste of plastic if you ask me. mind music, I'm going to invent inserting music directly into your mind. that's how I'll curb illegal downloading.

lila turned older yesterday.

yo bitches, I am here still

I'm as pumped for punk rock and hardcore now as I have ever been in my entire life. Meth Mountain and Grids tour this summer.
Grids 7" on Lunchbox is coming out in a month or so
Grids 7" on Inkblot is getting recorded in a month and will be out by the end of the summer
Grids one sided 12" will be out by Winter of next year.
Meth Mountain tape is out
Meth Mountain has vague plans to record stuff and release it.

Brandon/Brendan/Austin/Cable's band Lowbrow is really good. Like, really good. and Josh is helping them put out a 7".

I've seen a band from sweden, a few from charlotte, a few from raleigh, and I've played a show in the last two days.
Still vegan
Still Straight Edge
Still not giving a fuck what you do.

and stew and I are riding bikes almost every day.

Now, the bummer part of the update
I wake up every morning and go work at J.W. Grier Elementary school from 8 until noon. Then I either go to work for 8 hours, or have class until 8. Then on the weekends I work some more. It's rough, and it's fun, and it makes me realize that there is no fucking way in hell I'm going to teach right after college. Lila is graduating soon, and she has plans upon plans upon plans but I love her and I will be there or here or wherever. what's done is done. No big deal.

We've been busy doing lots of rad things. Lots of bikes, it's been getting cold but then it turns out it gets warm, then maybe cold again. who knows. skateboards no matter what NOW THAT I CAN WALK!
we built this in our garage, which means penalty box is now even more rader than where you live.

I'm convinced that hawks is the best band right now

I've been working really hard on this blog about nc/charlotte punk and hardcore and music in general in the area:

PENALTY BOX BLOG

school's been super hard lately, whatever. lila and i barely see each other, but she still rules harder than anyone will ever know. the house is still fun, though we've calmed down a bit and that's nice. everything is getting broken, but it's no big deal.
snow twice in two weeks? what the fuck charlotte!

i am posting from the hospital, because apparently they have wireless here. what a good idea.
it sucks to type, cause the iv in my arm is getting kind of sore.
soon i will have a bunch of alcohol in my leg around the thing that's there. then it will burn the veins away and will not hurt anymore (god willing).
super punx sellout!

xmas was rad. we had 22 people at my house, and the vancouver people came, and the massachusetttts people came, and the durham people came, it was rad.

there am to make punx.

on saturday, there will be a potluck at penalty box, because nothing is as x-mas as sharing. houses are exchanging presents. you are allowed to, and encouraged to, but not required to buy us presents. also, are am required to am bring am food because it's a potluck.

the number of records i own is getting uncomfortable. i think that they are a weight i keep to make sure i can't ever really leave charlotte, which is kid of ok, because everyone is finally making this place funner. there are shows coming up, but the one that i really am excited about is...

january 24, 2008
fucked up
double negative
grids
planet piss

i plan on having a fun time that night.

merry holidays

The day with its cares and perplexities is ended and the night is now upon us. The night should be a time of peace and tranquility, a time to relax and be calm. We have need of a soothing story to banish the disturbing thoughts of the day, to set at rest our troubled minds, and put at ease our ruffled spirits.

And what sort of story shall we hear? Ah, it will be a familiar story, a story that is so very, very old, and yet it is so new. It is the old, old story of love.

Two lovers sat on a park bench, with their bodies touching each other, holding hands in the moonlight.

There was silence between them. So profound was their love for each other, they needed no words to express it. And so they sat in silence, on a park bench, with their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.

Finally she spoke. "Do you love me, John?" she asked. "You know I love you, darling," he replied. "I love you more than tongue can tell. You are the light of my life, my sun, moon and stars. You are my everything. Without you I have no reason for being."

Again there was silence as the two lovers sat on a park bench, their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight. Once more she spoke. "How much do you love me, John?" she asked. He answered: "How much do I love you? Count the stars in the sky. Measure the waters of the oceans with a teaspoon. Number the grains of sand on the sea shore. Impossible, you say."

"Yes and it is just as impossible for me to say how much I love you."

"My love for you is higher than the heavens, deeper than Hades, and broader than the earth. It has no limits, no bounds. Everything must have an ending except my love for you."

There was more of silence as the two lovers sat on a park bench with their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.

Once more her voice was heard. "Kiss me, John," she implored. And leaning over, he pressed his lips warmly to hers in fervent osculation.

alright...here's the deal...

on JANUARY 24TH, everyone should really GET OFF OF WORK because there is going to be a really awesome show that I can't talk about, except to say that on january 24th, everyone will be going to the milestone and it'll be really really great.
trust me

seriously, trust me.

also, been making pizza lately. normally i'm more into cheese, but lately i've been into toppings. rick's been super into the crust lately, which is weird, but he's pretty good at eating crust, and it's nice to have some new cooks in the kitchen.
metaphors.

grids is recording after thanksgiving. I really wanted to book two days in a row that were thanksgiving, and the day after, but decided that was in poor taste (though not literally, since my family actually makes good food for thanksgiving that i can eat, which is nice, though seriously this parenthetical section of this liverjournal post should end). we're putting out a 7", because fuck a cd-r, and records are punker (more punk) than internet music.
maybe even a cover song...maybe it'll be super rebelious. get it. yeah, you do.

if i could be half as awesome as kathleen hannah then i would be a girl.
otherwise, nope.

this weekend was a lot of fun, I've noticed myself being able to move a lot more freely than i was even on friday, which is good. Grids has practiced twice, and I can't really "push" to hard with vocals because of my surgery, so everything is a little weird sounding. Saturday was awesome, we hung out and went places all day, almost everyone was with us most of the day, then we had a party.
lila has been around a little, which is a nice change of pace from the last few weeks. i went back to work yesterday and helped out all day. today i worked most of the day without pain, then my leg hurt for an hour so i sat at the stool reading. I'm amazed at how little changed in the record store over four weeks, but how a lot of little things were way different.
in the last two weeks i've been to 6 different shows, and in the next four days i'll be at two more. charlotte is finally starting to have fun stuff happening every weekend, and every night of the week i can find something fun to do. I really feel like, even though my body has really fucked me over throughout the last few months, at least I've been handed a bunch of time to hang out, go to shows, party, wander, play, whatever for a few months. I've eaten dinner with my friends every night for the last two weeks, and probably will every night till christmas.

even if nothing changes, at least we've showed the world that not all elections in america are won through hate and fear, and that sometimes, people even come together for the chance for something to change. things won't turn from black to white on inauguration day, but 4 more years of "family values" and i don't think i would have made it.
maybe there's a chance that i'll get health insurance, be able to afford to be a teacher without having another job, and send my children to a school that functions.

in the last three nights, i've seen billy bragg, watched obama speak exceedingly close, seen young widows play a rad set, and then tonight saw a cool show whilst history was made.

this is where we sat last night:

saw obama today/tonight.
i'll post pictures or review or something later.
we were third row from the front, in front of all the video cameras and stuff. it was pretty unbelievable. pretty much the only time getting surgery has seemed helpful, because the fucking thing helped me get up front, plus neal, plus elizabeth. just unbelievable.

my girlfriend is way busy, and i'm the opposite, though i can't ACTUALLY do anything, because my body is like a fucking sponge that exudes tumors and shit, it sucks.
